Lucknow, you made it sparkle.

DAZZLE & DIYAS · 25 OCTOBER 2026

A city’s festive spirit lives in the people who make things—and the people who stop to discover them. On 25 October, Dazzle & Diyas brought both together at Le Press.

October’s journal introduced the hands behind the craft. This time, exhibitors and visitors tell the story themselves. Healing Harvest, Mahik Designs and Viya Luxe shared their experiences, alongside visitors’ festival diaries.

To everyone who exhibited, performed, browsed or brought a friend: thank you. Revisit the day through their reels and find a moment you may have missed.

Next stop: Metaphor, 28–29 November. See you there.

Munshi ji: a world of readers.

For Munshi Newal Kishore, a world of readers began with a world of books.

Founded in Lucknow in 1858, his press published approximately 5,000 titles during his lifetime, according to Heidelberg’s bibliography. Hindi, Urdu, Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit and English shared this world of print. [1]

Poetry stood alongside religious learning, schoolbooks, medicine and translations. Behind every volume were writers, editors, translators and craftspeople bringing a text to its readers.

Open a book. Notice the script, the spacing and the care of its arrangement. Small details lead into a larger story. Meet it in the museum film.

Two ways to make a page.

The raised letter
Movable type uses separate raised characters assembled into a page. Ink touches their printing faces; pressure transfers the impression to paper. The pieces can be rearranged for another setting. [2]

A type case is a system of selection and order. A page that is effortless to read first had to be composed.

The flat stone
Lithography works differently. On a prepared surface, image areas accept oily ink while damp non-image areas resist it. Both lie on the same plane. [3]

The stone is not carved like a relief block. Follow the ink to understand the difference.

From printed sheet to book.

The press has made its impression. But the book is not finished yet.

Loose sheets must become pages that turn easily and stay together. In a traditional sewn book, folded gatherings are put in order and joined through their folds. A covering protects the text block. [4]

Look at the centre fold, thread and spine of an open book. Each reveals something about the hands that made it.

From preparing and proofing to printing, drying, folding and binding, the journey rewards patience. Next time you pick up a book, spare a thought for the work hidden inside its spine.

Printing through the ages.

A carved block, a case of loose letters, a flat stone: each offers a different answer to the same question. How can one page become many?

Woodblock: the image stands above the cut-away surface. [5]
Movable type: reusable characters are assembled into a page. [2]
Lithography: image areas accept ink while damp non-image areas resist it. [3]

Offset printing adds another step: the inked image passes through an intermediate surface before reaching paper. [6]

Watch the film with a printer’s eye. Find the ink, follow the sheet and notice what moves. The most revealing moment may be the instant a fresh impression appears.

The minds behind the pages.

A press needs more than machines. It needs people who can recognise a story—and give readers a reason to turn the page.

Ratan Nath ‘Sarshar’Awadh Akhbar

As the newspaper’s editor, Sarshar brought journalism and storytelling together. His Fasana-e-Azad appeared in its pages, giving readers the world of Azad and the unforgettable Khoji. Our comic returns to those characters with a new adventure. [8]

Munshi PremchandMadhuri · a later generation

The celebrated storyteller also served as co-editor of Madhuri, the Hindi literary monthly published by Naval Kishore Press. His work belongs to the institution’s continuing story after the founder’s lifetime. [9]

Walk through a world of print.

Begin above the rooftops. Take in the courtyards and workspaces, then move closer to one corner of the press. A whole world of making awaits.

The digital museum invites you to follow a book through the work behind its pages. Choose a machine, turn the view and let one question lead to another.

At the composing table: how do loose characters become orderly lines?

In the lithography studio: how does a flat surface hold a printable image?

At the finishing bench: when do separate sheets become a book?

Find a detail that makes you pause. Begin there.
