NOVEMBER 2026 · THE MUNSHIJI STORY PROJECT

Before the reel,
there was the printed word.

This November, help a new generation discover Munshi Newal Kishore Bhargava—the publisher whose press became an extraordinary meeting place for books, languages and ideas.

We invite Lucknow’s storytellers, filmmakers, photographers, artists and performers to create original tributes ahead of Metaphor Lucknow Litfest. Follow a printed page into the virtual museum. Tell a story in the verandah. Ask what preserving this place means for the city today.

This is a Le Press creator initiative. Festival accreditation, programme participation and stage appearances are confirmed separately; submitting an idea does not reserve a festival slot.

AN OPEN INVITATION · EVERY VOICE COUNTS

One reel.
A tribute that travels.

Honour Munshi Newal Kishore ji. Celebrate Lucknow’s pride. Bring India closer through knowledge.

In the aftermath of the upheaval of 1857, Lucknow began a difficult new chapter. Founded here in 1858, Newal Kishore Press helped books and ideas travel across languages and communities. We celebrate that publishing legacy as a source of dignity, hope and pride for our city.

Whether you are a student, reader, resident or content creator, tell us what Munshiji’s legacy means to you. Let your tribute imagine an India united by education, curiosity and respect for one another.

  1. Create a 45–90 second reel. Introduce Munshiji, explore a book or printing craft, or share a personal reflection on how knowledge connects us.
  2. Discover before you create. Visit the virtual museum and use its credited sources. Keep historical facts distinct from your own interpretation.
  3. Post and share your tribute. Tag @lepress_lucknow and add #MunshijiLivesOn #LePressStories.

Open the creator’s historical brief

The Press was established in Lucknow in 1858. Research documents its publishing in Urdu, Hindi, Sanskrit, Persian and Arabic, and its role as a gathering place for scholars and writers.

Build your story around a specific, cited book or exhibit. Do not present reconstructed scenes as archival footage, invent quotations or assert an unverified world ranking. Religious and literary traditions deserve thoughtful, accurate treatment.

Read Kyoto University research on printing and publishing and Ulrike Stark’s research on print culture. Follow the museum’s individual source credits for imagery and publications.

Suggested format: a 45–90 second original reel, an optional story linking to the museum, and a caption explaining what you discovered. These are creative prompts; final deliverables are agreed with each selected creator.
